#8 - Opening day (1938)

Wrigley Field opening day in 1938

Wrigley Field canvas print #8: A full house is on hand to see the recently renovated Wrigley Field on opening day for the 1938 baseball season. Total attendance would rebound to 951,640, as the North Siders rolled to the National League pennant. Note the eight Chinese elm trees that lined the new bleachers. This also was the idea of Bill Veeck Jr., the mastermind behind the outfield wall ivy. But the Lake Michigan wind and Chicago winter proved to be too much for the trees, which were replaced several times before ultimately being removed. The planters remain to this day.
